Average Nigerian Can Live on N3,000 Daily Reno Omokri
Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has said the average Nigerian can survive on N3,000 daily, arguing that poverty benchmarks should be considered within each country’s economic context.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, he said he personally visited markets with a journalist to ascertain prices of essential food items including yam, rice, maize and fruits. Omokri distinguished between the World Bank’s global poverty benchmark of less than $2 a day and Nigeria’s living costs, saying context matters.
Key Points:
The claim may understate the financial pressures many Nigerian households face.
N3,000 daily translates to N90,000 monthly, above the minimum wage but below living costs in many cities.
Food costs vary significantly across regions, undermining blanket assessments.
The statement risks appearing dismissive of widespread economic hardship.
Government officials’ comments on poverty often face public backlash amid rising inflation.
Omokri’s assessment is likely to spark debate on poverty measurement and cost of living. Nigerians should watch how officials address economic realities ahead of 2027.
