AFCON Qualifiers: Carlos Queiroz exits Ghana job after Black Stars’ 4-2 defeat to Gambia
Carlos Queiroz has left his role as head coach of Ghana following the Black Stars’ shocking defeat to the Gambia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Tuesday, September 29.
The Black Stars bottled a 2-0 lead at the Accra Sports Stadium as the Gambia staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 4-2 victory away from home.
Ghana’s humiliating loss came on the back of another 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their AFCON qualifiers opener.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), in a statement, noted that it had reached a mutual agreement with the Portuguese gaffer to terminate his contract.
Queiroz was reappointed by the GFA less than a month ago after leading the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said in a parting message published on the association’s website.
He added that “the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.”
