EPL: Wasteful Chelsea drop more points at Bournemouth

Chelsea returned to Premier League action after being blanked 1-0 at home by Nottingham Forest before the international break with a 0-0 draw away at Bournemouth.

Both teams had chances, and Andoni Iraola’s side were far from second best, but questions and pressure will mount for Chelsea after their Vitality Stadium performance.

In the first half, Nicolas Jackson hit the post from a distance, and then Raheem Sterling’s free-kick smacked the underside of the woodwork shortly after halftime before Levi Colwill was ruled offside after converting the rebound.

Bournemouth had chances as well, but Robert Sanchez made a superb late save to deny former Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke a late winner with his turn and shot.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team have only won one of their first five league games, but the point stopped a recent run of away defeats.

Chelsea have suffered three consecutive Premier League away losses, including a 3-1 defeat at West Ham earlier this season.

They had last lost four games in a row away at Stamford Bridge in the premier level 23 years ago.

As both teams’ stamina ran out, good scoring chances were scarce. Chelsea’s volume of shots was deceiving, as most of them were simple for Bournemouth keeper Neto to parry or claim owing to a lack of force and/or direction.
