“The rally goes on, and it is part of their constitutional responsibility to ensure that the rally is peaceful,” declared Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in the aftermath of the meeting with government representatives on the eve of the planned protest.

According to Channels Television, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the closed-door meeting was not open to the media. Attendees included the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, as well as the Ministers of Labour, Agriculture, Finance, Budget & Planning, and the Head of Service of the Federation. Representatives from the two major labour centres in the country, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), were also present.

The Federal Government had made an appeal to the NLC to reconsider its decision to proceed with the nationwide protest, asserting that it had already addressed nearly all the demands presented by the labour union.
