According to Sky News, Amirabdollahian’s remarks came after a rare and deadly Israeli airstrike deep inside Lebanon, which killed three people, including a member of Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group.
The strike also targeted a Palestinian figure close to Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls Gaza, but he survived, according to four security sources who spoke to Reuters.
The airstrike, which hit a location almost 40 miles inside Lebanon, was far beyond the usual range of the cross-border fire that has been exchanged between Israel and Hezbollah since the war in Gaza broke out in November 2023.
According to Sky News, Amirabdollahian said that Iran and Lebanon did not want to escalate the hostilities, but warned that Israel would face a “strong response” from Hezbollah and its allies if it continued its aggression.
He said that Netanyahu was “playing with fire” and that any attack on Lebanon would be his “last day”.
He also said that Iran supported a political solution to end the war in Gaza, and revealed that Iran and Saudi Arabia had been holding talks “on Palestine” in an effort to ease the tensions in the region.
